A Murmured Tale
Concept:
In this performance, the audience witnesses the formation and subsequent breakdown of the performance arena. It is through the collective experience of viewing the construction and destruction of this fantasy world that the play develops a life of its own. The show, rather than merely reproducing a semblance of reality becomes an organism whose life cycle is experienced in each staging of the production. What usually takes place in the background of a production is transparent in this work; the stagehands are as vital as the actors. The stagehands, known as "the Mechanics," will control the functions of the structure from the outside perimeter, thus creating the illusion of this alternate world. The audience, sitting inside of the structure, sees the actions of the "Mechanics" as shadows on the folding screens that make up the structure's walls. The story is of course important to this experience, but what is more imminent is the fact that the performance is created as the viewer experiences it. They are thus intrinsically connected to the process and become part of the organism.
